With nice weather, and lazy weekends, THRILLHO has had extra time to sit around and enjoy the finer things in life, like reading a book by the pool while his wife cleans the house. I was asking around for book recommendations, and a friend let me borrow a copy of I AM AMERICA (And So Can You!), by Stephen Colbert. If you are a fan of his show, you can pretty much know what to expect. It’s basically an extension of the show… an autobiography laced with the ‘thruthiness’ of such hot topics as race, sex, higher education, the gays, sports, and the media (to name a few). Colbert is a brilliant satirist, there is no debating that. His one liners are so simple and genius. This is one of the funniest books I have ever read. The book is plastered with footnotes and indent comments that basically mock his own mocking…. a double mocking… if you will.
The originality is what makes this book so hilarious. The satire is so in your face, and his fans obviously share the opposite viewpoints on everything he preaches. His constant praising of Fox News (with the exception of a couple ‘friends’ on ‘Fox and Friends’) sums up his mockery. He is the anti-Hannity, anti-O’Reilly… the character he portrays is the sarcastic product of the extreme right wing, criticizing everything from higher education (see what it did for the Unabomber?) to baby carrots (they are trying to turn us all gay).
