On Saturday, the wife and I took in a film. I really didn't know what to expect. Based on a graphic novel from the 80's, "Watchmen" is about a group of (non-super) superheroes that protect the world in an endless Nixon presidency. That's all I knew about it going in. I was close.... To fill out the main theme.... the heroes are recycled from generation to generation, when one gets too old, another replaces them. There is however one guy WITH powers, Dr. Manhattan. He is a naked blue guy that was the product of an experiment gone wrong. He can do pretty much anything include grow to 100 feet tall, create clones of himself, and manipulate space. The story revolves around him and Rorshack (a Watchmen with a funky mask). Without going into too much plot (since there isnt much in there anyways)... the Watchmen are disbanded. Rorshack is trying to get them back together, while Dr. Manhattan debates mortality. I would suggest at least knowing more about the content before going to see this film, however at the same time it felt like it was all overly spoon fed for almost 3 hrs.

Let me explain further while speaking from a movie perspective. The movie is almost 3 hrs long. literally 90% of the film is introducing you to the characters and their conflicts. Still, after all this time, I still didn't care about the characters at all. I may have been distracted by all the blue cocks (yeah, there is a lot of blue cock in this movie and hardly any boob.... it was very disappointing). There are legitimately some really spectacular scenes. However the filler in between these scenes are excruciatingly dull at times. The slow motion dialogue that is used as filler, often recycles the same content. There is one scene with the comedian that is shown maybe ten times in this film. It felt like watching a porno almost.... a really really long porno. The scenes that you want to see are great, but at the same time the filler in between seems really pointless. These scenes seem to lose their appeal after a while too.
The film is beautiful however. Some scenes are pretty jaw dropping. The special effects are integrated into the theme really well. The over the top graphic nature of the film is impressive. There is one scene where it shows a little girls corpse getting eaten by dogs. Some scenes were pretty shocking.

Can cockslap you three times at once
Still, I find it hard to recommend this movie to people. I could very well be wrong having not read the source material, but it seems like the director alienated too many people when making this. It seems like he went a little too far with trying to be faithful to the book. This was distracting to people who haven't read it, and probably a little too spoon fed for the people that have.
2 out of 5 Nixon's
