8907bread_lineDoes anyone else think it is funny that the broke, unemployed, downtrodden and poor alike will be cheering for Michigan State tonight in a venue that was built as a playground for a billionaire family and financed partially with tax dollars paid by.......well you guessed it, the broke, unemployed, downtrodden and poor?

I'd like to root for Michigan State for two reasons.

1.  They are the underdog against a team that is their superior.

2.  They are part of the Big Ten.

Raymar Morgan fixes slumping home valuesUnfortunately, I'm going to side with the Republican party and must speak out against the "Liberal Media" that is trying to tug at my god damn heart strings to make me side with Michigan State tonight because, "it would mean so much to the state of Michigan."  What the fuck does that even mean?  Apparrently Raymar Morgan's baskets will increase property values and Goran Suton's inside presence will make the auto unions and management come to a swift resolution which will fix the auto industry!  With this win, we are led to believe MSU is going to fix the entire state, you know just like Seabiscuit fixed American when he beat War Admiral in a head's up race.

This lofty bullshit has been all over the place since the begining of the NCAA tournament.  "Can you imagine if Michigan State makes it to the Final Four, wow that would be great for the community."  Why?  Why does this help the community?  The gate revenue is already taken into the greedy fucking pockets of the city which will no doubt end up in the hands of the civic leaders who will probably turn it over to the automobile industry so they can create a new kind of car......one that probably runs on coal, for example.

The sappy sentiment is just that.  Guess what, if the Spartans win tonight the unemployment rate in Michigan will still be around 12% tomorrow.  COUNT ON IT.  Will the feelings of goodwill spill over into the mortgage lenders, and automotive industry?  Are people going to pay their mortgage with Michigan State national championship attire?  Are Kalin Lucas' free throws going to cure Magic Johnson's HIV virus?  Are people going to wake up tomorrow and say, "HOLY SHIT THEY MAKE CARS IN AMERICA!?  OH MAN THEY ARE MADE IN MICHIGAN, THOSE MICHIGAN PEOPLE ARE WINNERS, I'M GOING TO GET ME ONE!  The answer is a resounding "NO."

I'm failry certain the people of Michigan will wake up tomorrow thrilled if they win tonight, but what happens then?  After they kill their hang overs, they will continue to look for jobs that don't exist. Here's a breakdown of a conversation between two jolly assholes if Michigan State wins tonight.

Fan 1:  "Wow did you see the game last night?  Go green, go white, go state!

Fan 2:  "Yes, it sure was great."  Shitty Michigan weather we are having today isn't it.  Are you still working fan 1?

Fan 1:  "No, my job got outsourced to India.  But wow what a game last night, I think change is coming to Michigan."

Fan 2:  "Wow that's terrible, so how are you getting by?"

Fan 1:  "Well my house got foreclosed on because I didn't have a job.  But State won."

Fan 2:  "Sorry to hear that.  Well it's tough out there."

So again, people of Michigan, people in the media and overall idiots, please explain what good this does for the beleaguered state besides take the people's minds off important details of life.  I'm looking at YOU Peter King, J.J. Putz, Mark Schlabach, among others.  I'm sure when people are standing in bread lines in a year or two they will gleefully look back at the potential Michigan State Spartans win in 2009 as a great day in a country that offers the world's highest standard of living.

*Note- I found this Mitch Albom quote about tonight's game after penning this piece.  Thanks for the dose of real juice, Mitch.  Also, note the use of "downtrodden."

"It will not save us.  No basketball game can do that.  No matter who wins Monday night, Tuesday morning the jobs will still be gone, the factories still silent and empty, the houses still for sale or abondoned altogether.  The out of town media who see a national championship tonight at Ford Field as some uplifting salve for downtrodden Detroit are a bit misdirected."

poor line

Tough times ahead...

Well, looks like Michigan will have to endure another tough year. They were so close to being bailed out by a college basketball team too.

I guess they will have to fund their economy by pickpocketing elected officials:
