LeGarrett Blount is getting the raw end of the deal. Sure he sucker punched someone in the face and ran his mouth off in the media in the weeks prior to the game. But a FULL YEAR suspension which will end the career of talented "student" athlete is a fucking travesty. Am I amazed by this? No, but its still bullshit. Certainly, a suspension should have been handed out. I agree with Brent Musberger who felt that a three game suspension would suffice since there were three separate incidents. And where is the suspension for Byron Hout and his sore jaw?
Of course some are praising the move of Oregon and new head coach Chip Kelly. To be fair, I think its bullshit that Oregon feigned that
they cared about their student by saying that "LeGarrett is still on the team, he will come to practice, and he will stay in school" (I'm paraphrasing). Some had Blount as a dark horse candidate for the Heisman, and he was pegged as a late day one draft pick by some. Immediately after the punch, he was no longer considered a draft pick, then on top of it his potential to make an NFL team took a huge blow.
Let's be honest, his profile states that he is/was a political science major. Does anyone actually believe he is going to finish school now, or jump into lobbying or politics upon his completion of the semester (I'm looking at you NCAA)? Of course not, after Oregon's bowl game or end of the season, Blount would drop out of school then hire an agent, then train for the combine.
This incident really underscores a major issue in college football. Coaches and administrations will give you a chance if you can run really fast or are athletic. But the second you wrong them, it's time to get the fuck out. I'm starting to think that you can't turn a human into a violent animal then expect them to "turn off their crazy" at the end of a game. You are dealing with kids who have everything thrown at them from the time they make visits to schools (money, women, favors, adoration) to the time they, um, gradua.......leave school. Colleges bring these kids in, then toss them aside for next year's model and have limited accountability for their (colleges) actions. Coaches basically own their players. Keep in mind that every scholarship is not a four-year one, but is awarded on a yearly basis. Do you think players only practice 20 hours a week? If so then you believe that all the extra hours they put in are voluntary. If you believe all this, then I have some investments in magic beans that are available for purchase.
So Oregon takes the high road and offers the kid a chance to practice, and remain on scholarship to attend school. What the fuck? I played football, practice fucking sucks. Considering Blount was planning on playing in the NFL, I'm sure he's glad he can still attend classes! Well, he's not been showing up to practice, so what do you think is going to happen? Toss another player on the scrap heap.
Oh yeah, Oregon didn't cover.
UPDATE: Blount's punch wasnt the only one caught on camera so far this season...
Review
Utah-Utah State
Well, I guess poaching a coach from Utah worked for the Aggies; I mean they covered the spread which means I lost. Also, that Utah defense looked like shit against an inferior opponent. Maybe I am giving the Mountain West too much credit this season?
Tulsa-Tulane
Good move Tulsa, I didn't want to have to rant up a storm against your program. You may be a formidable opponent this season.
Virginia Tech-Alabama
Bad week for the ACC minus the former high school team of Miami Northwest that now plays for Miami. I never thought the Hokies had a chance.
UB-UTEP
New QB, injured starting running back, same old questionable defense. Good thing UB opened up against a team that is prone to making mistakes.
Bets
As always, our lines come to you from the good people at Bodog.com
1. Colorado -4 @ Toledo
Dan Hawkins famously told boosters that there are no excuses if they don't win 10 games this year. Here comes win one. Toledo didn't play horribly last week but I think this former Big XII power will get healthy on some MAC team.
Colorado 42- Toledo 28
$50
2. Houston @ Oklahoma State- OVER 65
I don't care what the over is. I don't think Houston can stop the Cowboys and I think Oklahoma State will only stop the Cougars a couple times. Sure, the line is insane, but Houston can flat out run up and down the field, and Oklahoma State can too when not playing a great defense.
Houston 108- Oklahoma State 120
$50
3. AND NOW FOR MY

UNC -4 @ UConn
Knock me if you will, but Carolina is 4-2 against the spread on the road in their last six games and I'm not sold on UConn at all. Carolina drubbed The Citadel, although that's not really fair since former Citadel Punter Mark Kaspar was not available (half way down video).
UNC 30- UConn 20
$60
4. Western Michigan +1 @ Indiana
I watched Indiana almost lose to Eastern Kentucky last week and I came to the conclusion that Indiana is at least as good as a DIAA team. The Hoosiers pass defense is bad, their run defense needs work, and their offense is offensive.
WMU 28-Indiana 20
$20
5. Now your UB Bulls pick.
Pittsburgh -10.5@ UB
The Bulls refuse to play complete games, are too inexperienced, and Pitt has a great defense. UB should be the MAC stinker of the week. Don't get me wrong, the Bulls are at home and should be prepared, but they almost snuck up on Pitt last season, it won't happen again.
Pitt 35- UB 10
$5
Record
3-2
$$$

Good win for Michigan (I guess). The domers are not as good as the media wants them to be, and their last drive they shot themselves in the foot. instead of running it and killing clock, they aired it out twice stopping the clock both times. michigan won with 11 seconds on the clock, and no time outs. brilliant coaching charlie weiss!
