Before I rant, I feel that I should introduce myself on this site, or I should at least explain my sports allegiances. I grew up in Central NY. I am a lifelong Bills fan and Syracuse fan (mainly hoops), and I went to college in Buffalo, NY. 'Lucky' for me, I came of age right in time for the 4 Bills Super Bowls. I was young and naive, and after the initial heartbreak, I didn't think the 4 Super Bowl losses were THAT bad. I mean, it was so easy for them to get to the Super Bowl.... they would be there again shortly.... right?
On Friday night, I was thinking about how I used to believe all this as I watched the NFL network, as they aired the 1992 wild card game. We all know which game I am talking about. I mean, it has a NAME!! THE COMEBACK!!! The Bills were great, they were such an exciting team. You could never count them out.
16 years later.....
I am much older, and my allegiance is still as strong as ever. However my outlook and expectations couldn't be farther from what they once were. Contrary to the shit I may talk, I know that they are destined for failure. However, I must admit, after a 5-0 start last season, I thought the playoffs were finally in reach. I guess it's the curse of the Bills fan. All we need is a spark of hope, and we will convince ourselves that the truth isn't actual. The bottom dropped out.... it always does. Enter frustration.
Ralph Wilson is 90. He is going into the Hall of Fame this year, and the Bills are in the Hall of Fame game. The Bills are playing home games in Toronto now. Speculation of the team leaving Buffalo is at an all time high. Time for desperation I guess. What are you to do Ralph?
T.O.?
Are you for real? I was playing computer games with Smokey McTrees when my phone starts lighting up. I got about 8 txt messages within 30 seconds and everyone is going crazy that the Bills just signed TO. I thought it was a cruel joke. Of all the teams in the league, it seems like the worst match. Why would the Bills do this to themselves, and why would TO want to go to Buffalo, its where receivers go to die!
Think about it. Any of you that have been to a home Bills game after October 20th know that you will never play in the same conditions twice (unless those conditions are a blizzard with a slushy icy mix and 50 mph wind gusts). There will be a minimum of 2 games a year where the passing game is almost completely erased. It would be more, but they now play a home dome game in Toronto. Trent Edwards is not a deep ball guy either, He doesnt have that strong of an arm. Also, Buffalo does not have 'outdoor pushup' weather.
HOWEVER, the more I think about this move, the more I come to accept it. Perhaps its my jaded Bills fandom, but this could at least provide some entertainment and the spotlight. Since moving from Buffalo to Florida, I have to actively seek out any news on the Bills. They make it on Sportscenter once a week max, and it's usually the opposing team with a top 10 play. At least we will get some spotlight now. Also, what the hell is the worst possible outcome? He disrupts the team, destroys the non-existent chemistry, makes us miss the playoffs, and make us want to fire our coach? Sounds familiar. In fact, it sounds like every December since the Music City miracle. At least we didn't need to trade for him, and its only a one year contract.
Speaking of it being a one year contract.... Ralph, this is a desperation move. It's time to throw everything into the hat. Make some more moves. Solidify the O-line. Do something! You signed a deal with the devil, you better do all you can to make something positive come from this before we are dragged down into divaland. T.O. has good first years with teams, so I'm glad it's only one year. Lee Evans and TO could be a nice combo. Both are in the top 3 receiver with 30+ yard TDs these past 3 years. What really irks me is that the Bills would NEVER go after any big name free agents. Their name was never in the mix of teams going after these big names. Now they go after one, and he' the most notorious one possible.
Let me finish by saying that I hate T.O.. I think he is the worst role model an athlete that doesn't (hasn't been called out for) do roids can be. I think he is a cancer to a team. However, when you give cancer to a team that already seems to have cancer, they don't get super cancer....do they?
