thrillho beerAs I transform into an old man, my beer intake has greatly decreased, however the quality has greatly increased. Homebrewing in our inner circle of degenerate fools is increasing at a rate comparable to the great Texas Hold-Em boom of aught 2. It’s a rewarding hobby and I encourage anyone who has extra time on their hands to try their hand at it.

One of the latest participants of the homebrew scene joined me for a weekend of Football At Gainesville. We started off the weekend by hitting up a local hop shop and picking up some equipment, and then to a local beer store to try out some brews.

Here is a review of some beers that were had:

Hercules Double IPA

This IPA from the Great Divide Brewery in Colorado is my type of beverage. I am a huge fan of IPAs, the hoppier the better. This is NOT the beer to start the evening out with, it will linger on your pallet for a while afterwards. This beer packs a punch at 9+%AVB and 85 IBU. This beer tastes very similar to a 3C IPA that a friend and I have brewed twice and clocks in at the same percentage. If you like bitterness, and a kick, i recommend this beer. This is the first beer I have sampled from the Great Divide Brewery and they are 1 for 1 so far, and will try more of their brews.

…we might as well stick with IPAs and go to one of my favorite beers from one of my favorite breweries:

DogfishHead 90 Minute IPA

This IPA packs a slightly more bitter punch than the Hercules. It clocks in at 90 IBU. Another ’sipping beer’ and another to put toward the end of the sampling line due to the overwhelming hopiness. If you are a fan of IPAs, and have a strong pallet, this is your baby. the hoppiness is accompanied by a citrus, almost sweet fruity flavor. A delicious mix with the crazy hoppiness. If you would like a more mellow alternative, the 60 minute IPA is also a treat with a lower ABV and IBU. If you have a lot of chest hair, or enjoy getting really fucked up, really fast, try the 120 minute clocking in at @ 24% ABV and 120 IBU. I have only had one of those (at like $10 for a 12oz bottle) and it kicked my ass. Its like a 6 pack in one beer. I went on the dogfish tour this past summer, and the minutes associated with the IPA names goes along with the amount of time they let ‘Sir-Hops-A-Lot’ air cannon shoot concentrated hops through the brew.

Lets stick with the Dogfish head brewery and talk about two other beers that were sampled this weekend:

Midas Touch

Midas Touch is an old cloned beverage using ingredients found in King Midas’ tomb. Its hard to call this a beer, its more of a mead, or wine. This is about as far as you can get from the IPAs we just reviewed because i dont think there were any hops used. This was brewed with honey and grapes, and those are definitely the most overwhelming flavors. Another beer with a kick, it comes in at around 9%.

This beer used to pride itself on being the “oldest cloned fermentable beverage”… until:

Chateau Jiahu came around

This beer took the reigns from Midas Touch as the oldest cloned fermentable beverage. Dogfish head was hired by a scientist at the University of PA (if my hazy memory recalls correctly) to clone a beverage found in pottery jars in ancient China some 9000 years ago. It actually has a pretty similar taste to Midas Touch as both were brewed with honey and grapes. Jiahu used Hawthorne Fruit also. I have no idea what the hell that is, so I will attribute the difference in taste to that. also a good beer, also has a nice kick to it. Both of these beers can get a little overwhelming with their sweetness, so if you are a binge drinker, stay away.

this bring me to the final beer review for the day

La Choeffe

This is a Belgian beer that I just cant give an adequate review for. You see, we drank this beer at 2am along with stogies and drunk dialed everyone on our contacts list. This beer put us over the edge and is responsible for this new website. It turns out I offered to put together a website for LWN in a drunken stupor. Now once Otto gets him a job with the Bucs, the drunk dialing promises will be fulfilled…. I also owe people tickets to the Giants / Bills game apparently…

Don’t drink and dial, kids!
